Hi, I'm John, the Drilling Expert. This FAQ is provided as a free service to better assist our customers with their drilling questions. If you don't see your answer below, Ask Me A Question Alternatively, you can browse through ALL of the questions I've received here. Commonly Asked Questions Do you sell high speed sets? Do you sell metric jobbers? Do you sell numbered/wire size jobbers? Do you sell letter size jobbers? I need to drill into glass or tile. Use a Glass & Tile bit.
What's the difference between Jobber length and Screw Machine length? When you think of a standard, twist-drill bit, you're probably thinking of a standard jobber drill.
Jobber and Screw Machine drill bits, pretty much the same bits. They come in a wide variety of sizes, have the same tip geometry available (118° or 135° 'Heavy Duty'), and each have various coatings and metal qualities available. However, the keyword here is length. Jobber length drill bits have an overall length of roughly 8-12 times the DIAMETER of the drill bit. For example, a 1/2" jobber will be about 6" long. Screw Machine length drill bits are the shortest at about 40% of the length of an equal sized jobber. If you're looking for a really short drill bit, try a Double Ender These are even more useful if you don't need much depth, as you can flip the bit in the chuck when one end becomes dull. I need to drill a hole larger than 1/2", but my drill can only hold up to a half inch shank. Silver & Deming bits are available in large sizes, and all have a 1/2" shank.
For even smaller shanks, try a 1/4" Shank Jobber or a 3/8" Shank Jobber Is there something similar to a hole saw for thicker metal? What are left handed drill bits and what are they used for? Left-handed drill bits are similar to standard jobbers, but the flutes are ground in the reverse direction, so you'd drill the hole counter-clockwise. i.e. With the drill in 'reverse'.
This is useful for [A] If you break a bolt in a hole. You may be able to remove it easily just by drilling it with a left-handed bit.
or [B] Manufacturing a product. It may be handy to not need to reverse the spindle direction to drill a hole.
I broke a bolt / tap / screw extractor in a hole and need to get it out First, Try a Left Handed Jobber. These are similar to standard jobbers, except the flutes are ground in the opposite direction. This means that you spin the bit counter clockwise in your drill. Often times, this alone is enough to remove your broken bolt.
If you're still having problems after drilling with a left handed bit, use a screw extractor. A screw extractor will dig into the freshly drilled hole, and should provide you with enough grip to remove your broken bolt. If you've managed to break a hardened bolt, screw extractor, or tap off in the hole. You may need to use a Carbide Tipped Drill. These are a bit more expensive, but they are designed to drill hardened metal. Always remember to keep your drilling speed LOW with Carbide Tipped Drills to avoid excess heat. I need to enlarge a hole, what drill bit should I use? Drill bits are not for enlarging holes, reamers are.
I need to drill though fiberglass or asbestos what bit should I use? For fiberglass, asbestos, and other abrasive fibers, use a carbide tipped masonry bit.
Where are your masonry bits made? How do your bits compare to what I can find from Home Depot / Sears / Bosch? All of our masonry bits are of the finest quality, commercial grade, and made here in the USA using high quality steel sourced from the USA.
The high quality of the materials and workmanship will hands down beat what you can find at a home handyman store. Even Bosch (who manufactures all of their masonry bits in China now, not Germany) cannot provide you with more holes per dollar.
I have a masonry drill, but I'm not sure what type of drill bit to use Check to see if your drill's make and model are listed here. If you're still not sure, send us an email with your drill's make and model to Sales@BuyDrillBits.com
